Virginia Constitution Ratification Poster
This 1987 poster celebrates the bicentennial of the ratification of the Constitution by the state of Virginia. The allegorical image shows James Madison slaying the shark labeled "tyranny" with the weapon "a more perfect union." Patrick Henry, concerned about the rights of the individual, leans out to help an endangered man. The allegory is based on a painting by John Singleton Copley, "Watson and the Shark."
