This portrait of Andrew Jackson was painted by Thomas Sully, circa 1824. Jackson is framed by a very black background. It is quite similar to the face on the twenty dollar bill. "Old Hickory" became America's greatest living hero after his victory at the Battle of New Orleans. He was later twice elected president. Before he took office he promised to give the government back to the people, but while in office he instead greatly expanded the power of the presidency.
