The Astor Library at Lafayette Place, New York City
A cobblestone street leads up to the Astor Library beside the Wm. W. Horton Hard Wood Lumber Yard. This early library, created by funds provided in the will of John Jacob Astor, held about 200,000 books, but was not a lending library. In 1895 it merged with the Lennox Library and the Tilden Trust to form the New York Public Library.
