"Remember the 'Maine'"
This cartoon from the "New York Herald" uses a phrase that was often heard in the newspapers of the day. On February 15, 1898, the "Maine" blew up and sank in Havana Harbor. The demise of the "Maine" was frequently invoked in newspapers like William Randolph Hearst's "New York Journal " and Joseph Pulitzer's "World," as the two papers competed for readership by emphasizing Spanish brutality before the Spanish American war had even begun.
