"Monterey [sic], As Seen from a House-top in the Main Plaza, (to the West)"

This view of Monterrey, made by Captain Daniel Powers Whiting in October, 1846, was taken from the flat roof of a building just north of the cathedral, looking west over the main plaza. The Battle of Monterrey had taken place the previous month, in September 1846. This hand-colored lithograph was engraved by Charles Fenderich after Whitings's drawing and published in "Army Portfolio."
