"Monterey [sic], From Independence Hill, in the rear of the Bishop's Palace. As it Appeared on 23d September, 1846. (Looking East)"
The Bishop's Palace had been captured on September 22nd, the day before the sketch for this lithograph was made. Underneath the lithograph seven numbered items are listed; each one corresponds to a small number on the bottom and sides of the lithograph. The items are: "1. 'Sierra Silla,' (Saddle Mountain, about 7 Miles distant); 2. Village of 'Guadeloupe'; 3. Citadel, (in possession of the Mexicans, firing upon Genl. Taylor's position on the eastern side of the City); 4. Cathedral; 5. Cemetery; 6 Genl. Arista's Palace and Garden; 7. Part of Federation Hill, (shewing the point occupied by Major Scott, with the 5th Infy. with one of the captured guns throwing shot into the Main Plaxa.)" This hand-colored lithograph was sketched by Captain Daniel Powers Whiting from life. It is part of a series of prints by Whiting entitled "Army Portfolio" which was engraved by Frederick Swinton and published in 1847 by George and William Endicott.
