"Capture of Monterey [sic]"

General Zachary Taylor appears in the foreground with the column of attack marching down to the eastern edge of Monterey. Smoke from the Black Fort and the town itself show the Americans under fire. To the right of the Black Fort are Independence Hill, on top of which is the Bishop's Palace, where smoke indicates the position of Mexican artillery. This hand-colored lithograph was engraved by Bayot after a drawing by Carl Nebel as an illustration for George Wilkins Kendall's 1851 book "The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated."
