Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886)
Charles Francis Adams was the son of Louisa Catherine and John Quincy Adams. He was a well-respected politician and diplomat who served in the Massachusetts state legislature and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1859-61). As the United States minister to Britain during the Civil War, Adams successfully lobbied the British to keep them from officially recognizing the Confederacy. This portrait is by Vinton.
