A Thomas Nast Cartoon of Jefferson Davis
The cartoon shows Jefferson Davis disguised as a female. Many drawings and political cartoons from the North claimed that Davis was dressed as a woman at the time of his capture. Davis wrote that he had mistaken his wife's overcoat for his own, and that she had thrown her shawl over his head and shoulders for protection against a rainstorm.
