Jefferson Davis (1808-1889)

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Southern Confederacy during the American Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1828 and fought in the Black Hawk and Mexican Wars. He served in the U.S. House and Senate and resigned when Mississippi seceded. He was confined in Fortress Monroe in Virginia for two years after the war. After his release he dictated "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government " to his wife, Varina Howell Davis. This photograph was probably taken in the 1870s.
