General Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915)

General Porfirio Diaz was a Mexican statesman and soldier. He was president of Mexico from 1876 to 1911, except for the period of 1880 to 1884. The country knew peace and prosperity under Diaz, but it was government by the few. In 1909 Diaz announced he would restore democracy, but his fraudulent reelection in 1910 showed this to be an empty promise and triggered a revolution.
