Charles Devens (1820-1891)

Born in Massachusetts, Devens was a soldier, jurist, and cabinet officer. He sat for two terms in the Massachusetts Senate. During the Civil War, he steadily advanced to the position of major general. In 1873 he was appointed to the supreme court of Massachusetts. He served as attorney general under President Hayes.
