Edward P. Doherty (d.1897)

Edward P. Doherty commanded the 16th New York Cavalry detachment that captured John Wilkes Booth. They found Booth in the Virginia farm of Richard Garrett. Hiding in the tobacco shed, Booth refused to surrender. The shed was set on fire and Booth either shot himself or was shot by one of the cavalry. Doherty was promoted from lieutenant to captain. In this photo he is a captain.
