John A. Dix (1798-1879)

John Adams Dix was a Democratic U.S. senator from 1845-49, the secretary of the treasury in 1861 under Buchanan, major general of the Union army from 1861-65, U.S. minister to France from 1866-69, and the governor of New York from 1873-75. He also served in the War of 1812 at the age of fourteen. His most significant military contribution was the suppression of the New York City draft riots in 1863.
