James Shields (1806/1810-1879)
James Shields was a Democrat U.S. senator from Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri, and a brigadier general in the Union Army. During the Mexican War he was brevetted major general. President Polk appointed him governor of Oregon Territory (1848-49). In 1862, Shields handed Stonewall Jackson a rare defeat at Kernstown, when he kept his men hidden until the last minute, so the Confederates underestimated enemy forces.
