James Shields (1806/1810-1879)
James Shields was a Democrat U.S. senator from Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri, and a brigadier general in the Union Army. He challenged young Abraham Lincoln to a duel, but they managed to resolve their differences. During the Mexican War he was brevetted major general. President James Polk appointed him governor of Oregon Territory (1848-49). Shields was in Mexico when the Civil War broke out and was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers. He resigned in 1863. This carte de visite is an engraved portrait of Shields.
