James Shields (1806/1810-1879)
James Shields was a Democrat U.S. senator from Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri, and a brigadier general in the Union Army. He challenged young Abraham Lincoln to a duel, but they managed to resolve their differences. During the Mexican War he was brevetted major general. President James Polk appointed him governor of Oregon Territory (1848-49). Shields was in Mexico when the Civil War broke out and was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers. He resigned in 1863.
