John P. Slough (1829-1867)

John P. Slough was a Union brigadier general. Slough had been expelled from the Ohio legislature for hitting a colleague. When the Civil War broke out he became captain of the 1st Colorado and fought against his superior's orders at Glorieta Pass, forcing Sibley to retreat. Slough was chief justice of the New Mexico supreme court but the legislature tried to remove him. He challenged the sponsor of the legislation to a duel and was killed.
