Charles F. Smith (1807-1862)
Charles Ferguson Smith was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army, who died before his great promise could be realized. A West Pointer (1825), he earned three brevets in the Mexican War. Soon after the Civil War broke out Smith was appointed major general (1862), but was forced to turn his command over to a former student when a wound in Smith's leg became infected. Smith died within a few days.
