Gerrit Smith (1797-1874)

Gerrit Smith was a militant abolitionist, reformer and congressman as well as one of the leading philanthropists of the early nineteenth century. He encouraged and helped fund John Brown's ill-fated Harpers Ferry rebellion. Smith also was active in temperance, prison reform, international peace, women's rights and land reform. Smith served as the U.S. representative from New York on the Free-Soil ticket and served from 1853 until 1854.
