Green C. Smith (1832-1895)
Green Clay Smith was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army, a politician and a clergyman. Wounded at Lebanon, Tennessee, he was promoted to brigadier general in June, 1862. Smith resigned in December, 1863, to become a U.S. Congressman, and was brevetted major general for war service. He was elected as an Unconditional Unionist from Kentucky (1863-66). After serving in Congress he was appointed governor of Montana. Smith was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1869 and became an evangelist.
