Gustavus W. Smith (1822-1896)

Gustavus Woodson Smith was a major general in the Confederate Army and secretary of war for the Confederacy. He taught engineering at West Point and won a brevet in the Mexican War. When he learned the Federal government had ordered his arrest as a disloyal person, he turned to the Confederate government and was appointed major general. Smith was secretary of war in November, 1862, then resigned the army when five generals were promoted over his head to lieutenant general. He rejoined as major general of the Georgia militia. After the war Smith wrote many books about insurance, the Mexican War, and the Confederacy.
