John Cotton Smith (1826-1882)
John Cotton Smith was a Protestant Episcopal clergyman, editor and author. In 1860 he was installed as rector of the Church of the Ascension in New York, where he stayed until his death. Smith was famous as a scholar, a preacher, and a philanthropist. He was partially responsible for the first model tenement in New York City and wrote "Improvements of the Tenement House System of New York" (1879).
