Joseph Smith (1790-1877)

Joseph Smith was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. He is best remembered for heading the board that sanctioned the construction of the "Monitor." He was a veteran of the War of 1812. When the "Monitor" triumphed over the "Virginia" in 1861, Smith was given the rank of rear admiral and retired.
