Joseph R. Smith (c.1801-1868)
Joseph R. Smith was a brevet brigadier general in the U.S. Army. A West Pointer (1823), he served on the frontier and in the Mexican War, where he received two wounds and two brevets. Smith was retired from active duty in 1861 because of poor health. He was brevetted brigadier general in 1865.
