Martin L. Smith (1819-1866)
Martin Luther Smith was a major general in the Confederate Army. A West Pointer (1842), he joined the Confederacy in 1861. Although he was an engineer, and eventually became chief engineer to Robert E. Lee, John B. Hood, and Pierre G. T. Beauregard, Smith also commanded troops in battle. He was named major general in 1862 and was captured at Vicksburg. Smith was not exchanged until February, 1864, when he returned to his duties as chief engineer.
