Melancton Smith (1821-1874)

Melancton Smith was a rear admiral in the Union Navy. He fought in the Pacific, the West Indies, the Mediterranean, and the Seminole and Mexican Wars. When the Civil War broke out Smith was a commander, in charge of the "Massachusetts." He distinguished himself at New Orleans, where he sailed the "Mississippi" under Farragut. After the war he continued in the navy and retired as rear admiral in 1871. In this photo he is a captain.
