William Sooy Smith (1830-1916)

William Sooy Smith was an engineer and brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. Grant's cavalry chief, he led relief operations for Chattanooga and Knoxville. At the start of the Meridian Campaign in 1864, under Sherman, Smith was to lead a mounted column from Memphis. He was badly defeated by Nathan Bedford Forrest. A few months later he resigned, claiming poor health. An engineer once again, Smith was remarkable in developing techniques for building skyscrapers in Chicago.
