W. H. H. Southerland (1852-1933)
William Henry Hudson Southerland was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American War. As lieutenant he commanded the USS Eagle, commissioned in 1898, during the Spanish American War, when she captured the Spanish vessel, the Santo Domingo. In 1899 Southerland praised the 274 officers and men of the USS Badger. He commanded the USS Cleveland, which was commissioned in 1903. As rear admiral Southerland commanded the U.S. cruiser West Virginia in 1912.
