Joshua Fry Speed (1814-1882)
Joshua Fry Speed was Abraham Lincoln's most intimate friend from his days in Springfield. He was a partner in a general store, a farmer and real estate investor. Speed also served one term in the Kentucky legislature. Although he disagreed with Lincoln on the slavery question, he remained loyal to the Union and coordinated Union activities in Kentucky during the Civil War. His brother James Speed became Lincoln's second attorney general.
