James McCosh (1811-1894)
James McCosh was a Scottish-American philosopher and educator who came to the United States in 1868. He became a licensed preacher in his native Scotland in 1834. A philosopher, he wrote five books which attracted a great deal of attention worldwide. The College of New Jersey (later Princeton) called him to its presidency in 1868. Continuing to write his books, McCosh reinvigorated the failing college.
