The Brooklyn Bridge

The view is from the New York City side. Notice the masts of the sailing ships docked along the west side of the East River, which is South Street. Made necessary because of a surge of residential growth in Brooklyn in the 1860s, the Brooklyn Bridge was commenced in 1870. The designer was John Augustus Roebling, and the builder was his son. The great project, the first public bridge to connect Manhattan to Long Island, was completed in 1883.
