Hugh McCulloch (1808-1895)
Hugh McCulloch was comptroller of the currency and secretary of the treasury. McCulloch began as president of the State Bank of Indiana. The secretary of the treasury, Salmon P. Chase, appointed him comptroller of the currency in 1863. In 1865, when the secretary of treasury resigned, President Lincoln offered McCulloch the post. In that position he was a leader and reformer.
