The Brooklyn Bridge

Almost the entire span of the bridge is shown, with a crowded East River beneath it. The tall ships are docked along South Street; the Brooklyn Pier is on the right of the picture. Made necessary because of a surge of residential growth in Brooklyn in the 1860s, the Brooklyn Bridge was commenced in 1870. The designer was John Augustus Roebling, and the builder was his son. It was the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the world and the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time of its completion in 1883.
