Irvin McDowell (1818-1885)

Irvin McDowell taught at West Point and was made captain for his service in the Mexican War. He was made a brigadier general during the Civil War, but his forces twice defeated at Bull Run and he was removed from command. He commanded various territorial departments until his retirement in 1882.
