George McDuffie (1790-1851)

George McDuffie was a U.S. senator from South Carolina, as well as the governor of South Carolina. While in Congress he vehemently opposed the protective tariff. A grim man, he challenged enemies, and was challenged, to several duels, during one of which he was permanently injured.
