James B. McKean (1821-1879)
James Bedell McKean was a U.S. representative from New York (1859-1863). In 1861 when the Civil War broke out he organized the 77th New York Volunteer Infantry and served as its colonel. McKean was the first Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. McKean was also a lawyer and judge. He was appointed chief justice of the supreme court of Utah territory by President Grant (1870-1875). While there he ordered the arrest of Brigham Young and other leaders of the Mormon church on charges of polygamy.
