John Hanson McNeil (1815-1864) John "Hanse" McNeil was an effective Confederate leader in western Virginia. In 1862 he raised a company of rangers and became captain of his command. They were known as McNeil's Rangers. He led his men on numerous raids against the Union Army. He died of an accidental wound inflicted by one of his own men.
