James Birdseye McPherson (1828-1864)
When the Civil War broke out, James Birdseye McPherson became aide to General Halleck and then chief engineer to General Grant. Promoted to brigadier general and then major general in 1862, he was a talented commander. While investigating a counterattack during the Atlanta campaign, McPherson was surprised and killed by Confederate soldiers. He was the only federal department commander to die in battle.
