John C. Underwood (1809-1873)
John Curtiss Underwood was an ardent abolitionist who established farms in West Virginia using free labor. Underwood was appointed by Abraham Lincoln judge of the U.S. District Court of Virginia and continued his advocacy on behalf of African Americans by protecting their civil rights.
