John P. Usher (1816-1889)

John Palmer Usher was the secretary of the interior under Abraham Lincoln. Usher was one of three cabinet members to accompany Lincoln to Gettysburg. Usher resigned in 1865 and became a lawyer for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1872, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he served one term as mayor. This photo shows him in later years.
