Clement L. Vallandigham (1820-1871)

Clement Laird Vallandigham was a Democratic U.S. congressman from Ohio in 1858-63. Vallandigham was arrested by the Union military authorities in 1863 for a treasonable utterance (he made derogatory references to the president and the war effort) and banished to the Confederate States. He later resumed his law practice and died while showing other attorneys how a defendant's supposed victim could have shot himself accidentally.
