Daniel T. Van Buren (c.1826-1890)

Daniel Tompkins Van Buren was a brevet brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. He graduated from West Point in 1847 and later became an assistant professor of natural and experimental philosophy there. Van Buren fought in the Mexican War, but resigned in 1855 to become an engineer and lawyer. He began the Civil War as artillery captain in the 20th New York State Militia and was promoted to brigadier general in June, 1862. Van Buren was chief of staff for General Dix and Assistant Adjutant General for General Hooker.
