Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899)
Cornelius Vanderbilt II was the son of William Henry Vanderbilt and the favorite grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. He married Alice Gwynne; both were very pious. The couple built a 137-room mansion on Fifth Avenue and The Breakers mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. Cornelius II was a brilliant railroader but after a falling out with his father and the death of a child he suffered from depression and was no longer a leader of the New York Central lines.
