William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885)
William Henry Vanderbilt was the son of financier Cornelius Vanderbilt. He became the head of a railway trust and was strongly opposed to government regulation of the railway industry. Vanderbilt was given control of the Staten Island Railroad in 1857, named vice-president of the New York and Harlem Railroad in 1864, acquired other railways, and became president of the New York Central Railroad in 1877.
