Egbert L. Viele (1825-1902)
Egbert Ludovicus Viele was a brigadier general of volunteers and a U.S. representative from New York. A West Pointer (1847), he served as an engineer. In 1856 he was engineer in chief of Central Park in New York City. Viele was also engineer of Prospect Park, Brooklyn, in 1860. When the Civil War broke out he was quickly made brigadier general (August, 1861). Viele authored the "Handbook for Active Service," which was popular with both the Northern and Southern volunteers. After the war Viele was elected as a Democrat to one term in Congress, from 1885 to 1887.
