Francis Vinton (1809-1872)
Francis Vinton was the rector of Trinity Church in New York City, beginning in 1855 as assistant minister. Previously he had been the first rector of Grace Church in Brooklyn (1847-55). Vinton comforted President Lincoln after his son Willie's death in February, 1862, telling him not to mourn because "Your son is alive in paradise." It is often said that Lincoln underwent a religious experience through the counsel of Vinton and was reconciled with Christianity.
