William Sprague (1830-1915) and Kate Chase Sprague (1840-1899)
Kate Chase was the daughter of the secretary of the treasury Salmon P. Chase. William Sprague was the governor of Rhode Island from 1860 to 1863. He was a member of the Rhode Island State Militia and was offered a commission as brigadier general in 1861 but declined because he wished to be a major general. Sprague was elected as a Republican to the Senate (1863-75). They married in 1863, but were ultimately divorced in 1882.
