Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883)

Alexander Hamilton Stephens was the vice-president of the Confederacy. He voted against the secession of Georgia but accepted his state's decision. As vice president (1861-65) Stephens consistently rejected the policies of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president. Stephens favored peace and attended the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. After the war he was arrested and imprisoned for several months. Although Stephens was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1866 he was not allowed to take his seat. Stephens later served in Congress (1873-82) and was then elected governor of Georgia.
