George Stephenson (1781-1848)
George Stephenson was the English railroad pioneer and engineer who manufactured the standard-gauge locomotive. He constructed the world's first public railway between Stockton and Darlington in 1825. His steam-engine, the "Rocket," traveled at 30 mph in 1829. In 1830 he opened the Manchester-Liverpool railway.
